Is War Ever Justified…if so When?

Given the advancements of Humanity through the current day, this question begs many opinions. Given America’s history only makes the answers to the question more complex. Our very beginnings were established as a result of a Revolutionary War. The Civil War revolved around the moral issue of ending slavery. World War II, in the minds of most was necessary to end a reign of terror that had it not been stopped, could have resulted in the loss of all freedom in Europe and eventually endangered  the U.S.A, to say nothing of the potential annihilation of the Jews. What about the atomic bombs dropped on Japan to end that conflict? Where do our positions stand on the war in Iraq or Afghanistan?

We could also consider different kinds of war. Are financial sanctions a form of political or economic war? When might they be justified? Does forcing the population in a country to potentially suffer from hunger, loss of education, loss of medical treatment and loss of life to pressure an enemy government to change its ways simply a way of taking the position that  the end justifies the means?

It’s clear that many examples can be given where had we Humans chosen to just lay down and not fight, tyranny would be the rule rather than the exception for most Humans living today.  However, to pursue war as a first measure to confront problems is ludicrous in the other extreme. Please let us all know what your thoughts are on this subject. This question appears very broad on the surface, but it seems that breaking it down into more manageable parts for discussion would be most helpful. As an example, is there a limit to the potential that Human suffering could reach that war would be excluded as an option under any condition in your mind? Are there any circumstances where Human casualties are acceptable in your mind? Tough questions are they not? Let’s get started and see what we might teach each other.

For me, war should be the last resort in any situation. Many wars are criminal when pursued for political or religious purposes. I think some of the Christian Crusades, The Nazi War, just to name a few that comes to mind are not good in anyway, except that they bought people together as they fought to stop the aggressors.
I know from experience in some cases, when peoples lives are at stake a fight is needed to stop a bully. The same goes for war when a countries leaders are corrupt. The sad part is, it is not the peoples fault, or the majority of the population, but their government. And in a war, who suffers…? The innocent people.
Too bad we do not have technology that could find those responsible, attack them and let everyone else un-touched.
As much as I hate to hear of war, I also hate to hear of passiveness that is breed into the common person. They are basically programmed to be passive, whether through religion, spiritual means or other. I am not trying to down religion or spirituality, but the fact that it sometimes makes people to lazy, passive and allow others to run their lives, even if it means to death.
As in all things we could consider in life, there are many situations and scenarios to look at.
I think most wars are started by governments, cult-like religions, and other organization or groups of people who want to either control people, or control resources, other times to make money.
I guess in the end… I see it fit to go to war if we are being taken over by a dictator, or an entity that threatens freedom, and peoples rights to live a prosperous life.
As much as I do not like saying this, a new war may be on the horizon that threatens peoples rights to believe what they want. The U.S. may be pushed into it.
